Stress and Anxiety Stress and anxiety are feelings everyone experiences at some point. It is good to have a certain amount of positive pressure to avoid dangerous situations, to keep us alert and give us the motivation to deal with everyday life. However, it is when the feelings become too strong or go on for too long affecting our daily lives that it is time to take action. Stress and anxiety have both mental and physiological effects on the body. Mentally, we may lack concentration, feel irritable, lethargic or exhausted, daily worries get out of perspective and we start to lose our confidence and feel disconnected from others. If anxiety persists, we start to react physiologically, the breath becomes irregular and can cause panic attacks, sweating or heart palpitations. If we are anxious over a longer period of time, the body gets into the habit of having an automatic mental and physiological response. Without regular exercise and meditation, these negative thought patterns firmly establish themselves into our subconscious mind and deep within the cells of our body. It helps to understand the possible roots of our anxiety and we need to consider:
Kundalini yoga works to release these negative thought patterns and physiological responses to establish our natural rhythm. We encourage the neutral mind to give perspective and emotional balance. With simple natural breathing, oxygen and blood properly get to the pituitary gland in the brain to rebalance our moods and behaviour. We reconnect with the breath at the navel point to establish our sense of wholeness, identity and confidence to go for what we deserve. Kundalini yoga works directly on strengthening the nervous system and rebalancing the glandular system. It increases the energy flow through nerve pathways and gets more blood to the brain leading to better glandular response and circulation to strengthen our relax¯ response so that we can manage challenging situations. As we synchronize our breath with our movement we bring our awareness to the body and relax our thoughts. Through continual stress and anxiety, the adrenal glands become over active so that our body and mind move into a constant state of alert. Kundalini yoga calms the adrenal glands to relax the body and mind. The kidneys balance to release toxic emotions such as fear so that we can move forward with self-belief and trust. Kundalini yoga works to create healthy new pathways in the brain. It strengthens us to the core so that we take responsibility for ourselves. We connect with our true centre to confidently ride the ebb and flow of life. "If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it, and this you have the power to revoke at any moment"Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor 161-180.
